Ron Paul makes some excellent points.
His solution is to remove immunity from government workers doing anything that is illegal for us to do. If it's not legal for you or I to grope people in an airport and take nude pictures of them, why should it be legal for our government to do so?

My legislation is simple. It establishes that airport security screeners are not immune from any US law regarding physical contact with another person, making images of another person, or causing physical harm through the use of radiation-emitting machinery on another person. It means they are subject to the same laws as the rest of us.
The solution to the need for security at US airports is not a government bureaucracy. The solution is to allow the private sector, preferably the airlines themselves, to provide for the security of their property. As a recent article in Forbes magazine eloquently stated, “The airlines have enormous sums of money riding on passenger safety, and the notion that a government bureaucracy has better incentives to provide safe travels than airlines with billions of dollars worth of capital and goodwill on the line strains credibility.” In the meantime, I hope we can pass this legislation and protect Americans from harm and humiliation when they choose to travel.
Let's hope that Congress recognizes public outrage and passes this legislation.

The interesting thing is that a bunch of folks from Congress are ready to dump TSA wannabe cops and go contractor. You have to be amused by this because you are swapping vanilla ice cream for vanilla ice cream...and get the same results. Course, if you took off the top layer of this...you'd find these congressmen are getting money from private security firms who will greatly benefit from this dump on TSA.
ReplyDeleteIt's time to start limiting ourselves from flights and just go back to the old America where we drove from Huntsville to the west coast in three days...enjoying the scenic drive and never worried about someone touching our "junk".
I haven't driven for years, and this kind of invasive "you have no rights" attitude is why. I don't like living in places where I have no rights, where I can be fined for refusing them the right to see me naked or grope me. And since I have a choice, for the moment, I choose not to fly.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, this is blatantly unconstitutional. Yes, I've heard the people who say airports are private company so they can do whatever they want, and it's horse puckey. Why? Because the people doing the screening are TSA employees. They operate under the regulations of a government agency. And since a government agency is conducting these searches, they violate our 4th amendment protetions against unreasonable searches and siezures.
And I can't imagine much that would be more unreasonable than demanding to see air travelers naked or grope them, especially in the complete absence of any suspicion that those air travelers are doing ANYTHING wrong.
