Montgomery's Red Light District Expands

It's not what you think. The city of Montgomery has decided to install nine more red light cameras at five new intersections sometime within the next month or so. Despite their rationalizing, they are doing this so they can issue more tickets and rake in more money. This is a revenue stream, pure and simple.

Nine additional cameras will be installed at Montgomery intersections in the coming weeks to catch red-light runners, and if enabling legislation is passed in the upcoming session, cameras also will be used to catch speeders in Montgomery.

On Thursday, Mayor Todd Strange announced the additional cameras for five new intersections throughout Montgomery. There currently are 12 cameras in the program located at nine intersections.

Oh, and in case you're okay with that, they also want the Legislature to pass enabling legislation so that they can ALSO operate SPEED cameras.

Look, I opposed this whole red light camera scheme from the beginning. I told you that this would balloon, that the revenue was and would always remain the driving reason for those cameras. I also said that having the red-light cameras would make speed cameras more likely.

This is a BAD idea, folks... from so MANY angles. I saw it coming, but far too many others weren't quite so prescient.

And before you think even for a SECOND that the GOP won't pass the speed camera bill, I remember it was a GOP legislator who sponsored that danged red-light camera bill in the first place.

How's this for a new slogan for the GOP in Alabama? "GOP: Empowering your government over you at every opportunity!" How... inspiring. And EXACTLY what we wanted to see, isn't it, when we voted at the last election?

  1. And after speed cameras will come the robo tickets for missing tail lights, etc. All because the incumbents are too afraid to say, that you want us to do X, we need Y dollars more than we got already or we will have to stop doing this other thing you wanted last week.

Remember the day I got yellow lights all the way on the Southern Bypass, suspect that will never happen again.

  2. I hope so, because if you thought you voted for some libertarian Buckleyites in November, you were sadly mistake. My only question is why people like yourself continue to support the GOP? At the very least I feel like you shoudl feel taken advantage of.

  3. Tal, you think I support the GOP? Do you READ my blog? Heck, did you read THIS POST? Because upon re-reading this pos, it sure doesn't look like I am mindlessly in full support of the GOP.

  4. I was not insuinating that you are a [mindless] follower of the GOP. I feel, and correct me if I am wrong, that the GOP takes advantage of people with your particular ideaological beliefs and they never are held to account. I understand practical politics and, I assume, that you would rather have Republicans in control than Democrats so it appears to me that you support Republicans as a matter of real poltik than principal. I honetly believe, though, that if people disasitsified with Bush republicanism would sit at home a few cycles (yes, that would mean Democrats would win elections) then the GOP would be more apt to take you seriously. I am not a hardcore idealogue, so this isn't really an issue for me.

*A parting note. I in no way intended to insult anyone and am just trying to make an observation about people that tend to lean toward the GOP persuasion, but criticize them often. Feel free to correct any of said observations. I am genuinely interested in your response.

  5. Yeah, I forgot to spell check that last post and I can't type so I needed to. Let me defend myself to some extent by saying I am not a total idiot.

  6. I didn't vote for McCain, nor did I vote for Bush... either time. I don't support candidates because they have an R by their names... if I don't like the D or R, I don't vote for anybody in that race.

And yes, that means I leave blanks on my ballot... and usually more than one.

As to their policies, sometimes the R's talk the right fiscal game, they just lack the conviction to follow through. And they lack that conviction because their fiscal positions are not heart-felt, by and large, they just hope to attract votes. Once we vote, they could care less about us.

I recognize that, but really, what is the realistic option? The LPA hasn't been on the ballot in several election cycles, and the picture doesn't look good for 2012. The Constitution Party talks about their huge ballot access drive, but they're aiming at legislative districts instead of statewide access.

So, what are the alternatives to the D's and the R's in Alabama? Realistically, I mean.

  7. Ok, I respectfully withdraw criticism of you personally, but I think you are the exception, not the rule and I still think, in terms of generalities, if more "conservative" or "libertarian" or which ever label you like, voters did what you do the GOP would get the message.

  8. With that I agree. Too many folks are still in the "give the GOP a chance" mode. The same folks who protested so vociferously in 2009, piously proclaiming "this is a nonpartisan protest", need to admit this really IS a non-partisan protest movement and start protesting against the Republicans, as well.

  9. Guys....I think we are all at the same junction...it'd be nice to have a third party of some reality to vote for...just to punish the other two. Nobody can say they are positively happy with the Democrats or Republicans presently...and this Tea Party thing isn't exactly the long-term solution.
