Thursday News Roundup

Here are some article and opinion pieces that I thought were important enough to point out to you. I hope you give each one at least a glance.

Party-time in DC
If you were wondering what your Congressman might be doing in DC these days, the answer is that he's probably going to parties. This week alone, there are 150 fund raising parties scheduled for our wonderful elected "leaders" in Congress to run for re-election. Marvelous. Just marvelous.

Too Late To Stop Fiscal Meltdown?
Senator Mark Kirk makes the case that it may already be too late to avert catastrophe, as our debt has already grown too large. It's a good read, even if you may come away from it unconvinced. He makes his case...

Montgomery leaders want speeding camera revenue
Montgomery is licking its chops at the prospect that our Legislature may pass a new law allowing cities to use cameras to give speeding tickets. Remember, folks, they don't REALLY care about safety, it's all about the revenue.

Food prices soaring
Food prices jumped almost 4% in February, the largest monthly increase in food prices in the past 36 years. This doesn't bode well for our economy. Inflation is already hitting us, no matter what the feds say.

Japan may endanger our economy
In response to the massive damage by the earthquakes, tsunami, and the nuclear plant situation, a logical move would be for Japanese investors to repatriate... that is, to remove their money from global investments and invest them locally in repairing the significant damage they suffered. And if they do this, our economy could stumble to its knees... or worse.

Inflation is here and getting worse
Here's an excellent article on why inflation is coming.

Bull market is here
If you're happy the market is running strong in spite of the many problems in our economy, don't be. It just turned south.

Feds to police students' evening activities
Yup, the Obama administration is trying to force schools to keep track of what their students do and say on social networking sites like facebook and twitter. There are a lot of legal and constitutional issues raised by this... definitely NOT a good development.

Education Department officials are threatening school principals with lawsuits if they fail to monitor and curb students’ lunchtime chat and evening Facebook time for expressing ideas and words that are deemed by Washington special-interest groups to be harassment of some students.

There has only been muted opposition to this far-reaching policy among the professionals and advocates in the education sector, most of whom are heavily reliant on funding and support from top-level education officials. The normally government-averse tech-sector is also playing along, and on Mar. 11, Facebook declared that it was “thrilled” to work with White House officials to foster government oversight of teens’ online activities.
